Social Programme – September News
Wednesday 15th September: Temple Pub Stroll
Total walking time from first to last pub is a mere four minutes (honest!) … hence the term “stroll”.
7.15pm: Old Bank of England, 194 Fleet Street, EC4A 2LT
Following a refurbishment by relatively new occupiers, McMullen, whilst you will recognise the wonderful interior shell, it’ll be a case of spot the difference at the island bar. This, the eastern-most pub in our patch, usually offers three ales from McMullen’s brewery along with solid pub-grub. Our tables will be a couple of the tall ones between the front door and the bar.
8.00pm: George, 213 Strand, WC2R 1AP
This GK Metropolitan pub has more freedom than most of its stablemates to choose its guest ales, frequently from London breweries, and to devise its own menu, which includes a steak and oyster pudding, once much favoured in these parts! Our tables should be to the right as we enter, near the front windows overlooking the Strand.
8.45pm: Devereux, 20 Devereux Court, WC2R 3JJ
We are assured a warm welcome in this ‘proper’ pub, to be found in the alley of Devereux Court which runs from the side of the George. Amongst the choice of ales on handpump there will, with any luck, be something a bit special! Our tables should be to the right, opposite the side bar.
9.30pm: Edgar Wallace, 40 Essex Street, WC2R 3JF
Named as such in 1975 on the centenary of the famous crime-writer’s birth, this is another ‘proper’ pub with no muzak and mobiles discouraged. In pre-pandemic days, one was spoiled by a vast choice of real ales: now there may be just two or three, but the staple Crouch Vale Brewers Gold should be one of them. Our tables will be immediately to the left of the door we enter by, against the wall facing the bar.
